David has also taught many classical and jazz instrumentalists the art of improvisation. Music students with an interest in jazz improvisation will be able to learn this skill, even with no previous jazz experience. Students interested in classical music can learn how to improvise a descant part to a hymn tune or to enhance a baroque sonata with improvised embellishments.

David has also helped many adult beginners discover the joy of playing an instrument. He makes full use of the wide range of resources that technology has to offer today's music teacher, including podcasting, sequenced MIDI accompaniments, notation software, portable recording devices and more.

Information on Massachusetts District Bands & The Massachusetts Music Educators Association
Massachusetts music teachers, music students and performing musicians are fortunate to have a strong state organization for music teachers in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA). Each year the MMEA organizes and presents instrumental and vocal concerts featuring some of the best middle school and high school music students in the state.
With the assistance of their music lesson teachers, MA middle school music students audition for the opportunity to perform with other outstanding students in the Massachusetts Junior District band, string orchestra, jazz band or chorus. MA high school music students are afforded a similar opportunity to participate in auditions for the Massachusetts Senior District band, string orchestra, jazz band or chorus.
MA District Bands The Music Educators Association divides Massachusetts into five districts, MMEA Eastern District, MMEA Western District, MMEA Central District, MMEA Northeastern District and MMEA Southeastern District, with each district having their own auditions and concerts at a local public school.
The Senior District Festival fall 2010 audition pieces for the Eastern District have been announced. The trumpet audition piece is the Trumpet Sonata, by Flor Peeters, 1st and 2nd movements. The flute audition piece is Danse de la Chevre for solo flute by Arthur Honegger.
High school music students from all over MA can also audition for the Massachusetts All State Festival band, orchestra, jazz band or chorus. The Massachusetts All State 2011 Festival auditions will be held at the Shrewsbury MA High School on January 29, 2011.
New Hampshire also has an organization for music educators in the New Hampshire Music Educators Association (NHMEA). This music education association seeks to improve the quality of music teaching and learning and provide leadership in advocacy for music education in NH. The NHMEA held it's All State Music Festival & Spring Conference at Concord High School in Concord NH on April 8-10 2010.
There is a good amount of competition for the available seats in all of these groups. The best students work hard, often with their private music lesson instructors, on their solo audition pieces. Studying, practicing for and going through the audition process by itself is an excellent musical, learning experience.
The Massachusetts Music Educators Association is the MA unit of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The MENC is the national association for music education, providing information and resources for all music educators across the country.
